There has been a lot of hype lately about having a HDTV antenna. Is it just hype or should you really get it?

First, what is the hype about having a HDTV antenna? The hype is that with the antenna, you can watch 1080i resolution broadcasts and will get better quality than satellite TV. The truth is going to hurt if you already have bought a HDTV antenna. There is really no such as a HDTV antenna.

HOW AN ANTENNA WORKS

All an antenna does is pick up frequencies. The frequencies that you pick up for your TV are Ultra High Frequencies (UHF) and Very High Frequencies (VHF). All TV broadcasts take place in the VHF and UHF bands. High definition can be part of these frequencies and you do not need a special HDTV antenna to pick them up. Your regular antenna could do the job just as well.

An HDTV antenna and a regular antenna have the same electrical and spatial properties. They must have directivity, high front-to-back (F/B) ratio and low-noise amplification when the antenna has an amplifier. If they have the same properties, why pay more to get something that is the same?

People have this perception that they need a more powerful HDTV antenna because of directivity and amplification. This is not true. HDTV is actually more noise immune than analog television and will be able to produce high quality video at significantly lower signal-to-noise ratios. Digital TV needs less antenna gain and can tolerate higher noise levels. A HDTV antenna and a regular antenna have similar directivity/gain properties so you should receive analog or digital broadcasts with the same good quality.

GHOST IMAGES

One problem that an analog antenna and a HDTV antenna have in common is that there is always a chance of a ghost creation. To get to your antenna, the signal must take many paths to get past tall buildings or other reflective structures. An antenna has to have a high F/B ratio to overcome the creation of a ghost image. There is actually more chance of getting a ghost image with a high definition TV since it has a slightly larger bandwidth. An analog antenna could handle this image better than a HDTV antenna. If the ghost images that could come up with an analog antenna or a HDTV antenna bother you, you should probably get a satellite dish. There should be no ghost image because the signal does not have to take multiple paths to get to the satellite dish. The satellite's signal goes directly up into the sky and the signal comes back from space. There are no buildings or anything else between the satellite dish and the sky.

A satellite dish can also provide more channels than an analog antenna or a HDTV antenna can provide. All the channels will all come in crisp and clear with no chance of a ghost image.

If an analog antenna or a HDTV antenna cannot provide you with the TV image that you want, you might as well go with a satellite dish and that is the truth, not hype.

Gently Clean Your Face

Gentle is the key word here, as scrubbing the skin will only further irritate the acne. You should only use a gentle soap or skin cleaner made specifically for acne prone skin. Use a soft cloth to moisten the face and then apply the soap or cleaner gently to your skin, starting at the hairline and working your way down to your neck. Using your fingers, rather than a wash cloth, to work the soap around your face assures that you will not further irritate the acne.

Rinse your skin with plenty of water and pat dry with a soft towel. Again, do not scrub your face using the towel.

If you are prone to having oily skin, it may be necessary to apply an astringent to your skin. This should be done with care, as some astringents may irritate your acne. If you elect to use an astringent, it should only be applied to those areas of your face that are most oily. If you have concerns regarding the use of astringents, it's best to consult with your dermatologist.

Avoid Touching Your Blemishes

It can be very tempting, but don't give in to the urge to squeeze or pop pimples. What can seem like immediate gratification, can turn into something far worse. Breaking open a pustule or pimple invites bacterium to spread, causing even more pimples and blemishes. It can even result in permanent scarring.

A better solution is to just avoid touching your face altogether. Your hands tend to be dirty, oily and carry germs, which can all lead to the further spread of the acne. Just don't do it!

Apply Makeup Sparingly

Makeup has become a part of everyday grooming, but must be used carefully in combination with an acne skin condition. Of course, the best solution is to not wear makeup at all. But if you decide it is a ecessity, make sure that the product you use is noncomedogenic, or will not clog your pores. And lastly, never use a makeup that has an oil base, it can severely exacerbate your acne.

Shave with Care

Shaving is a normal part of male grooming, but can be a painful experience for those suffering from acne. Deciding which shaving method - safety razor versus electric shaver - is right for you is more of a trial and error process. Try both and see which is more comfortable for you.

Regardless of which you choose, there are a few recommendations that will make the shaving experience more pleasant. Try to moisten the beard as much as possible before shaving. If using a safety razor, try using a sensitive skin shaving cream. Never use dull razor blades; it will just irritate your acne. And don't forget to change the blades on a regular basis.

I don't know about you but I've made money doing paid online surveys. It's a great way to make a little extra money, but there's a few things that they don't tell you in the sales letter.

First off, get another email account that you don't mind getting spammed. As soon as you sign up, you'll get slammed with every offer under the sun. Then if you try to unsubscribe, you get put on another list where they sell you something else. Even with the Can Spam Act, they still do it. Many of these guys are overseas where American laws don't apply.

Secondly, you'd better realize you'll be spending a great deal of time doing paid surveys online. A typical Information Technology survey can go for over a half hour. Couple that with all the smaller things, you'll have to do and you won't get out from in front of the computer.

Thirdly, this won't make you rich. They showcase a lady that makes 2000 dollars a month. Do I believe it? Yes, but that lady is not leading a very fulfilling life. She's probably chained to her computer. I make about 100 dollars a month, extremely part time. Will you do the same? I have no idea so I won't guarantee you'll do the same. My job in information technology is why I keep getting higher dollar surveys.

Next, you must sign up for a bunch of different paid survey services. You can't sign up for one service and expect to get anywhere. After a while you can decide which services are sending you survey's you want to do and get rid of services that aren't working out.

Many different company's and industries need your unvarnished opinion on their produccts. Examples of industries that use paid online surveys are automotive manufacturers, IT consulting companies, airlines, supermarkets, and hotels. If you have a strong interest in one of these businesses when a survey is made available you will be contacted and asked to participate. You may even get to participate in a focus group.

In conclusion, paid online surveys are an easy way for just about anyone who spends time at the computer to make a little supplimental income. They are also a great way of making sure your opinion is heard and really knowing that someone is taking your suggestions into consideration. Due to acne some parts of the human body are affected. Youve had a motor vehicle accident some time ago when a local character by the name of Fred Fuddle smashed into your rear end but now you're in the home stretch with his Adjuster, I. M. Strong, and youre going to be paid for your loss by Strongs employer, Rock Solid Insurance. A good portion of it will be for your Pain and Suffering. That is, in the lingo of insurance claim settlements, your Compensatory Damages. Let's talk about that:

BODILY INJURY PAIN: How much pain can an individual stand? The answer to that is: Reaction to pain not only differs with each of us, but often within each of us. While pain can usually be scientifically measured, the limits of human endurance cannot. We all have a different Pain Threshold - - that is, the point at which we begin to feel physical distress as we enter into, and then deal with, a period of suffering.

A lot depends on what's going on in your life and how you experience it. Temperament and psychological factors are involved. Like, for example, your personal life is in a shambles (for any number of reasons) and that has hindered your ability to recover. Or, perhaps the company you work for is on the brink of bankruptcy!

The mechanism through which you feel an injury is so complicated that there are times when the same pain appears to be more (or less) than that of previous days. For example: one day you have a problem that causes you to complain endlessly. This makes you impossible to live with and your pain seems to be much stronger. Yet, a similar situation on a much better day, doesnt upset you so profoundly and the pain is not nearly as bad.

YOUR PAIN AND SUFFERING (Your Compensatory Damages): The type of injury you suffered, as a result of Fred Fuddle crashing into you (plus the nature and length of your treatment) are two of the best indicators for both the adjuster and Rock Solid Insurance to consider regarding the Pain and Suffering you experienced. However, there are several other areas you should call to the attention of Adjuster Strong so as to make him aware of what you've been dealing with.

MEDICATION: The fact that you were prescribed either over-the-counter or prescription medication by Ole Doc Comfort, your family physician, to relieve pain, inflammation (and/or any other injury symptoms), will help to convince I. M. Strong that your injuries were serious and caused you to endure a great deal of Pain and Suffering. No matter which way you slice that cake, the more powerful the medication, and the longer its prescribed for, the greater the value your claim will be. That's a fact of life in the business of insurance claims.

LENGTH OF RECOVERY: The longer your recovery period, the greater your Pain and Suffering- - therefore the higher the settlement value of your bodily injury. Make sure Doc Comfort clearly indicates this in his Final Medical Report. Tell him he must state in writing (via the weeks and months) how long it will be, before you were able to engage in your routine activities. Make sure he doesn't send that report directly to Adjuster Strong. You get it first and then later on youll send it along to Strong. But, before you do, read it. If good Ole Doc Comfort hasn't clearly stated this, hand it back to him and tell him he must. You have every right to insist that he does. You're paying his bills, it's your report, your insurance claim, and your big bucks he's not being serious about!

As long as you continue to have physical problems you should keep going back to see your doctor, again and again, and again ! Other than the obvious Pain and Suffering it will help to convince Rock Solid Insurance youve endured, there are two other very good reasons for doing this. They are as follows:

(1) The fact that your records show visits to your doctor, four, six, eight (or even more) weeks after the accident, will convince Adjuster Strong and Rock Solid that your injury took a long time to deal and required continual attention. (Plus it clearly indicates each and every day you were unable to work and therefore it proves, beyond the shadow of any doubt, the income you lost). Never forget: Your attending physicians Medical Report is the only way you can prove you were unable to work and in any court of law that will justify your claim for lost wages.

(2) When you visit Doc Comfort be sure to tell him there's been little (if any!) decrease of your pain, discomfort, stiffness or immobility. Make sure, when he does execute that Final Medical Report, this is clearly stated in his written remarks. If it isn't you have every right to go back, hand it to him and insist that it is.

SCARS: In many instances large and obvious scaring increase's the value of your claim (big time!) - - especially if the scarred portion of your body is visible. If you've been sitting at a desk for 25 years, your chin is double, your hair is gone, and you own a bulging stomach, and thats where the scar is, its not going to be worth much. But, if you're a tall, dark and handsome, twenty year old and the scar is on your face, than it's worth a ton. Take colored photographs of every scar and every scrape that causes swelling and/or discoloration to your skin plus every mark on your body! After youve handed a copy of those photographs to Adjuster I M. Strong hell be sending them to his boss in the Home Office. Ive been in that seat so I can flat out guarantee you his immediate superior in the home office will stare at those photos and gulp. Hell blanch, take a deep breath and send Strong a one liner that reads something like: Do whatever it takes to get rid of this one. Se!

ttle it and lets move on.

If the scar is bad enough insist that Dr. Comfort refer you to a Plastic Surgeon for an opinion as to whether your scar can be repaired and/or removed. Once you've been examined ask that Specialist to detail in writing (and insist that he send his report to you) how much it will cost to make it look right again. You may never get it repaired, and/or removed, but include that Plastic Surgeon's report, plus copies of the bills youve accumulated because of your visits to him, and hand them to Adjuster Strong. This will absolutely, positively give your claim more value !

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS REGARDING OBTAINING THE SERVICES OF A LAWYER:

QUESTION: Is it necessary to obtain the services of an attorney who will take a cut of 33 1/3% of the settlement (in some states up to 50%) he recovers from the insurance company of the individual who struck you? ANSWER: Yes, there are some situations where it makes sense to do so. HOWEVER: Especially in a case where the impact is absolutely not your fault in any way, shape, manor or form - - you should be clear with the lawyer you choose that those out-of-pocket expenses you would have been paid (weather they represented you or not) should not be part of his settlement!

Lets say, for example: You were at a dead stop while waiting for a light to change from red to green, when struck a tremendous blow in the rear by a distracted driver. Its 100% clear to all concerned that the damages you received will be paid by the insurance company of the individual that struck you.

The property damage to your motor vehicle is $2,800, your lost wages are $450, your final Doctors bill (plus all your other Out-Of-Pocket Medical Expenses) comes to $750 for a total (Property Damages/Lost Wages/Medical Bills) of $4,000. you live in an area where the lawyers typical Contingency Fee is 33 1/3%. QUESTION: Should that lawyer take 33/13% ($1,333.33) of that $4,000? ANSWER: No! QUESTION: Why not? ANSWER: Because you were going to get that $4,000 weather there was an attorney representing you or not! In a situation where the liability is clear the attorney should take, as his fee, 33 1/3% of everything he gets above and beyond , that $4,000!

So, lets say the attorney obtained a settlement of $4,800 for your Pain and Suffering. When that figure is added to the $4,000 of Out-Of-Pocket Expenses (as detailed above) the total would come to $8,800. To be fair he should not take 1/3 of $8,800 ($2,933.33 - - thus leaving you with $5,866.66) but 1/3 of the $4,800 ($1,600 - - thus leaving you with $7,200). QUESTION: What has he done to earn that additional $1,333.34? ANSWER: Absolutely nothing!

As of January 2003 it was determined that in the good ole US of A, there were approximately 12.3 million motor vehicle accidents involving over 21 million vehicles last year. This amounts to a little over one crash per second. Lets take a look at four of the most common of these gazillion impacts and the typical injuries they cause.

#1. LOW SPEED IMPACTS - - ESPECIALLY REAR-ENDERS: These are crashes that are considered to be any collision that takes place at speeds under 10 MPH. While there is absolutely no justification to call it a Low Speed impact thats what the insurance industry loves to identify them as. Why ? Because a moniker like that is supposed to indicate that the, so-called impact, you were subjected to could not possibly have caused an injury.

Its true that when such a crash does take place theres often not a lot of damage done to the motor vehicle and yet, in most cases, people involved in these types of accidents more often than not suffer injuries - - neck injuries especially!

Although the insurance industry would like to have those making a claim think differently an injury can and absolutely does occur when a low impact collision takes place. The most common is identified as the Whiplash. This takes place when the occupants dont have the slightest idea about the impending collision so they cant brace themselves by forcing their back and/or neck against the seat or headrest. Because of this their body gets whipped and snapped about something fierce.

Automobile bumpers are built to withstand up to a 5 MPH crash without damage. This is not done to insure the safety of the occupant but rather to protect and limit the damage to the bumpers, keeping the cost of repair to a minimum. Many times vehicle to vehicle impacts can sustain an impact of 8 to 9 MPH before theres recognizable damage to the motor vehicle. However, when the bumper doesnt crumble and absorb the force of the impact, more of that crash is felt by the occupants. IMMEDIATE INJURIES: The individual thats been crashed into by another (even at only 5 MPH) is thrown forward with a severe jerking motion - - causing necks to snap and backs to twist. Because of this many Soft Tissue styled injuries take place, including multiple body bruises, plus chest and rib injuries. In most cases adjusters attempt to deny the possibility of injuries in a low speed impact but research substantiates just the opposite! Sure, the motor vehicle will show little damage but the velocity and accompanying force have to be transferred somewhere, and thats to those sitting in that vehicle. Cars are built to withstand such minor impacts - - the human body is not!

#2. FRONTAL COLLISIONS: In most frontal impacts the occupants can generally brace themselves because theyre usually aware of the collision theyre about to be subjected to. In Frontal Collisions the speed and weight of the vehicle play a role in the injuries of the occupant. (The more the vehicle crumbles at impact the less severe the injuries to the occupants. Many times airbags will deploy). In frontal impact collisions the speed and size of the vehicle determines the injuries that can take place. (And - - getting back to rear-end collisions for just a moment - - the striking vehicle not only undergoes a collapse, but transfers momentum to the car thats been struck by pushing it forward. The airbag may or may not explode. This depends upon the rigidity of the vehicle thats been struck).IMMEDIATE INJURIES: Head and neck, back, spine, rib and clavicle, arms and legs, concussions, soft tissue, internal, dislocations, abrasions, cuts and bruises.48 to 72 hours later: Headache, blurred vision, dizziness and loss of taste, smell or hearing. Also, difficulty breathing, blood in urine or stool, swelling, loss of motion and visualized bruising take place.

#3. SIDE IMPACT: Many times the occupants head will hit the side window and bounce off of it. There are no air bags nor bumpers, engines, etc., to help protect ones body or absorb the force of the impact. IMMEDIATE INJURIES: Head and neck, arms & legs, soft tissue, dislocations, scrapes and bruises. 48 to 72 hours later: Pain, headache, blurred vision, dizziness, loss of taste, smell or hearing, numbness or tingling (and basically the same as those listed above) so, at the risk of being repetitious but because its so important, I must say once again: Its of major importance that the individual exposed to impact - - no matter how slight it may seem to have been - - should immediately be examined by a medical professional.

#4. ROLL-OVER ACCIDENTS: The typical roll-over accident is very serious. The most common factors in single vehicle accidents are approaching a curve at too high a speed, leaving the pavement or highway, or over-correcting the steering wheel - - particularly in vehicles with a short wheel base. The severity of injuries to the occupants generally depends on the beginning velocity of speed, the number of rolls, condition of the vehicle, and what your motor vehicle rolled through, over and into! Damage to the vehicle is generally extensive. It has been determined that 60% of the economic costs from roll-overs resulted from occupant ejection, and that the initial roll-over speed was between 40 to 60 MPH. (A recent study reported that restrained occupants showed a higher proportion of neck injuries than the unrestrained).

IMMEDIATE INJURIES: The whole nine yards - all of those as detailed above.

Property Renovations: Part 2 More Focus Areas

In Part One of our discussion, we focused on several aspects of home renovation that are important for success in your investment. Last time, we focused on more of the smaller details - the garden, repairing and touching-up minor damages, fences, etc. Now, we should focus on some of the more noticeable areas of property renovations.

It?s very important to check for any electrical or plumbing problems before you start doing any painting on the interior of the home. This way, you won?t run into any problems down the road with re-painting if any damage occurs.

Painting your interior is important stuff - you?d be surprised at the degree that paint affects the selling price. The key is to do your math first; if you feel like painting yourself would save enough money and could be in done in an adequate amount of time, you should use the do-it-yourself approach. However, if you are inexperienced and are unable to devote enough time and effort into the project, letting a professional do the job is probably the safest route.

When approaching the paint job, keep in mind the K.I.S.S. principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Don?t let your personal preferences affect the way you go about your property renovations. The following are some basic painting rules you should follow:

1. Always prepare surfaces prior to painting. Be sure to wash down walls, and repair any cracks or holes, and sand, where needed. Bathrooms and kitchens are the most susceptible to grime and mold, so pay close attention.

2. Use one color. It saves you time and money. Gloss paint usually appears darker, providing slight contrast. The condition of the trims should determine the use of gloss or semi-gloss. Remember, as well, that gloss tends to highlight imperfections.

3. Make a trip to the paint store and browse the newest colors. Feature walls are an effective way to add some pizzazz to your paint job. Dark, small rooms and dark paint do not mix; this only enhances the problem.

4. If there are darker colors or wall stains, you should use a special sealer. If you don?t, and you apply extra coats of paint, the walls will remain stained.

5. Wallpaper trims often add a nice touch, so apply when needed.

The kitchen, for many homeowners, is the center of attention. Kitchen remodeling, however, can get pricey, so you may want to stick to changing minor features on the property. Renovations such as new bench tops, repainted cabinet doors, and new wall tiles are all simple fixes. New door handles, faucets, and wallpaper trims are all low-cost solutions, as well.

Sometimes a quick facelift isn?t enough. On some occasions, a kitchen may need to be fully replaced. If this happens, remember the K.I.S.S. approach, and don?t go overboard. Many suppliers offer kitchen kits which are ready to assemble; these can help save loads of time if you come across them. Keep the kitchen light and bright, with cheerful curtains.

Make sure all appliances are in working order, and only replace if it is unavoidable. Install a durable floor, and test all faucets, to ensure that water pressure is adequate. If you run across second-hand items in good condition, make use of them.

If you get an appraisal with an appraiser that a lender does not accept, you have just wasted your time and money, and you are no closer to getting the property you want.

In the world of commercial real estate, not all appraisers are considered equal. It takes a certain expertise and knowledge to correctly appraise commercial property, and not just anybody is qualified. There are two types of appraisers, a fee appraiser and a staff appraiser. A fee appraiser is generally available to the public for hire, and a staff appraiser works for a specific lender or lending firm.

Let's look at what makes a qualified appraiser and how they can help you purchase the property you want with as little hassle as possible.

It is common practice for a lender to appoint the appraiser that is to appraise the property in question. For the most part, lenders will have trusted appraisers that they work with all the time, and will require that you use only their appraisers. Be sure to get clarification on this issue before you hire an You can trust MAI appraisers to perform an accurate evaluation of your prospect property. With this appraisal, you will be able to get the proper amount of money loaned on the property and not come out short.

It is always a good idea to research your appraiser and view some of the work that he or she has done in the past. The appraiser and the appraisals should be of the utmost professional quality because so much is riding on their appraisal. Even if it costs you more money, always use an MAI appraiser to avoid problems with the lender and unnecessary expenditures.

In 1999, the US Food and Drug Administration approved labeling of soy protein as effective against coronary heart disease. The conclusion to recommend the health benefits of soy was based on information that at least 25 g/day of soy protein had been demonstrated to reduce LDL and total cholesterol. The suggestion was that the intake of 6.25 of soy protein per serving 4 times daily would achieve this condition. The same FDA statement reminded that soy isoflavones were not founded to be critical for the cholesterol-lowering benefits of soy protein.

Since this FDA report, there has been a significant amount of research targeting the health effects of both soy isoflavones and protein.

Based on reviews of 22 randomized trials comparing use of isolated soy proteins with other proteins, the American Heart Association (AHA) nutrition committee recently concluded in a report published in the 2005, January 17 Rapid Access issue of Circulation, that there is not a benefit from soy. By consequence, AHA does not recommend isoflavone supplements in food or pills.

The AHA nutrition committee reveals that from 22 total reviewed studies, in 19 studies there was no evidence regarding effect on LDL cholesterol or on other lipid risk factors. The panel also noted no demonstrated positive effect on vasomotor symptoms of menopause or related to slowing postmenopausal bone loss. Similarly, there is insufficient evidence to recommend soy isoflavones for prevention or treatment of breast, endometrial or prostate cancer.

However, the study authors recommend consumption of foods containing soy, as they generally have high contents of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, and vitamins.

What is HDTV? Do I have it?

Lets not get too hung up over the technical details. If you bought a new TV (tube, LCD rear projection, DLP rear projection, LCD or Plasma or whatever else shows up on the market) which can display a High Definition picture and you have purchased a High Definition programming package with High Definition hardware (Set-Top-Box or DVR), then you have HDTV. Even an older Enhanced Definition (ED) set can display a very good HD picture unless you are very close to the screen - too close for normal viewing.

As for which of the two main resolutions, 720p or1080i, are best for sports, dont worry about it. The network programmer or program service provider has already made that decision. ABC shows its programs in 720p, CBS in 1080i, ESPN in 720p, FOX in 720p, HDNet in 1080i, NBC in 1080i, TNT in 1080i, WB in 1080i and WGN in 1080i. For what it's worth, 720p is generally regarded as superior for watching rapid movement but your High Definition TV will convert these to its own native resolution automatically. If your HDTV is made to display 720p, it will convert all 1080i programs to that resolution while doing little or nothing to 720p programs. If you have a 1080i set, it will do the opposite. This is all possible because the programs are all in a digital format so very little picture quality is lost.

At the lowest HD resolutions, you still have many, many more times the number of dots and lines on the screen making up the picture than the old television standard and this means you see more details more clearly. See the quarterback and the defense he is attacking at the same time. You see the receiver cut and break free just as the quarterback does. That changes the way you watch and understand the game. From behind the running back you see more of the line of scrimmage as the line blocks and he makes his decision about which hole to hit. It really is more like being there.

The wider screen is changing the way sports shows are produced. The camera can be pulled back for a wider shot and, because of the high definition picture, detail is not lost. More of the golf course can be seen as the shot flies off the tee. This gives you an entirely different perspective on what is happening.

There are many different types of antennas for the ham radio operator. There are directional antennas such as the yagi and quad and nondirectional antennas such as the vertical. Wire antennas for the most part are semi-directional and usually radiate their signals in a figure eight, broadside to the plane of the wire. The yagi type of antenna is directional and has several elements that are generally designed for one frequency. There are those that will tune to two or three amateur frequency bands but lose some power and bandwidth in the design. These antennas are designed to be mounted on a tower or pole type of support with a means of turning them in the direction that you want the signals to go. They are very popular with the serious hams because of their ability to receive and transmit radio signals in the desired direction.

The cubical quad antenna, like the yagi, is a directional antenna also. These antennas tend to be very large at some frequencies. They are very effective directional antennas if you have the room to put them up. Cubical quad antennas are made of wire and some kind of supporting structure such as bamboo or fiberglass poles. They also are mounted so they may be rotated into the desired direction.

Wire antennas are for the most part designed with a specific frequency in mind. They can be very simple in design such as a dipole, which is two pieces of wire insulated in the center and installed between two supports and relatively flat or supported by one pole and the sides sloping like an inverted vee shape or supported by a single pole with the wire sloping in the direction that you want the signal to go. These antennas are very simple to design, tune and install and are very popular with beginning ham radio operators. Wire antennas can be very complex also with many pieces of wire, signal traps, coils, insulators and tuner components.

These antennas are the most used types of Ham Radio Antennas. Antenna design, tuning and installation can consume a lot of the ham radio operators time, but it is very rewarding when those signals come in and go out where you want them to, with the maximum transfer of power.

Here are some thoughts about internal and external antennas on cell phones. Is it true that external antennas picks up and holds a signal better than internal antennas? I was just wondering about the signal strength and quality in the phone, that's about it.

Well, the thing is that technology has come thus far that we no longer require the age-old antennas that the old Nokia's used before. An internal antenna would work just as fine as an external antenna, which however means that you are purchasing a good model phone and not some really cheap model.

A Motorola V3x has an internal antenna, which works wonderfully great. I don't even have any problems with reception, which is amazing!

I feel that an internal antenna is superior to the external antenna in wireless devices. An external antenna can easily get broken or cracked and then your phone is basically useless or should I say ruined. Many of the manufactures' have now gone to internal antennas and the devices are much better than the old external antenna devices. In looking at today's devices, the Samsung and LG phones still seem to have external antennas and the Motorola devices are now all internal.

The Nokia and Sony devices also have internal antennas. All of the PDAs now have internal antennas, including the newer Treos. Sound quality is based on the phone model, itself, but as far as getting and retaining signal strength, I think you will find that the phones with internal antennas, such as the Razr, several of the Sony models and the PDAs are better than those devices with external antennas.

I have looked a several external antennas for my cell phone. (I have a Motorola V120) I noticed that the antenna had a smaller coaxial cable with it. My question is would it be possible to attach my cell phone to the TV antenna or would this make a problem? I can not pick up anything where I live. There are main power lines not to far from my house. I think that prevents me from receiving a signal. If this would not work will the other external cell phone antennas do anything?

Televisions operate in a different frequency range than cellular phones so hooking up to a television antenna will not improve your signal. If you have absolutely no signal at your house and have to travel a distance before you pick up a signal the prospects are grim. If you have some kind of signal outside of your house then an external antenna should help you. In addition to an external antenna an inline amplifier would strengthen your signal ever more.

I have an LG phone using Verizon service. In or outside of my house my signal varies from 1 to 4 in strength even when I'm perfectly still. I don't think the little flat antenna boosters that go behind the battery are working. I mean, my calls are dropping like flies. It's ridiculous!

My advice is for you to try doing a *228 (send) option 2 to your phone. You should consider doing that once a month to update the most recent tower list. However, if that doesn't work, then you should think about purchasing an antenna that does work with your phone. The only thing is that the antenna would need to be plugged in.

Looking ahead of 1990's, one could observe a very rapid expansion of global market in satellite communication into personal communication and new mobile satellite services, such as Personal Communication System (PCS) and Mobile satellite Services (MSS) respectively, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems, Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation, and new direct broadcast satellite services. LEO satellite services were introduced towards the end of 1990's, and the growth depended on the competitive factors. The conventional Fixed Satellite services (FSS) and Maritime Mobile Satellite Services (MMSS) grew steadily but not as before.

Optical fiber cables, now forming a greater part of this communication revolution through out the world, severely challenged the fixed satellite services. Very high data rates, similar to High Dynamic Range (HDR) graphics, which requires greater than 155Mb per second of data transfer, which required excellent signal conditioning, were being carried by the fiber optics cables. Fiber optic cables have a better performance than satellites, having much less time delay in transmission. It was a time when satellite services needed to prove its advantage on HDR applications and networking, having a more modest data rates, for example T1=1.5Mb per second. A T-1 line actually consists of 24 individual channels, each of which supports up-to 64Kbits per second data rate. The advantages include, wide area coverage, distance insensitivity, flexibility, multiple access and destination capabilities and economy. Although much of the HDR traffic, such as multi-channel telephone trunks, from satellites to cables, will be transmitted through fiber optics cables, new opportunities opened up for HDR satellites to carry HDTV picture signal distribution, and also support the emerging field of Distributed High Performance Computing (DHPC). To gain access to this application market, HDR satellites needed to be developed and deployed commercially.

It was clear by now that the world of satellite communication was changing fast and threats existed for fixed satellite services, while new opportunities opened up in mobile, broadcast and personal services. Presently, the US leadership in satellite communication is being challenged, while it was undoubtedly the leader of such technology and was an agent of the changes in the past.

There are reasons as to why there has been a bleak assessment of the future of US in satellite communication technology. The important reasons include, the governments reduced role, lagging R&D effort, lack of systems conceptualisation, non-focusing of effort in new applications, and lack of effective industrial liaison and co-operation. On record, the assessment shows that during 1970's and 1980's there was extremely limited activity in US in the area of satellite communications projects, while there were frequent diverse research programs that were going on in Europe and Japan. Although these projects are of a different technology and much less budgeted than the US ones, the overall impression of US losing ground in the area of satellite communication is essentially correct.

The setting up of policy, planning, and supporting industrial development in different countries varies widely, with the governments of each country playing a key role in such activities. The policies and planning of the governments in Europe and Japan are far more aggressive than that of US, with the resources for such development being far more deployed. In-fact, in the last ten years, NASA has spent much less in satellite communication than its counterparts, the Japanese National Space Development Agency (NASDA) or the European Space Agency (ESA), although NASA's total budget is many times greater.

On the other hand, a transmitting antenna converts electrical signal into radio waves and transmits them to the Earth stations. The radio waves (signals) received and transmitted by the two antennas are based on certain frequencies and the receive frequency is always different from the transmitted one. These two frequencies are kept separate owing to the reason that if they were the same, there would conflict between the received and transmitted signals. These antennas are generally directional antenna, transmitting more power in some direction than others. The directional property of an antenna is represented by its radiation pattern, which are generally 3-dimensional.

An antenna needs power to transmit. This power lets the antenna transmit over greater distances. This ability to transmit depends on the gain of the antenna. The more the gain, the antenna can transmit a greater distance. This power is derived from the onboard electrical power generation in a satellite. Here there is a limitation on this power. A battery bank and solar cell panels, provide power to the onboard satellite systems. The solar panels are active during the sun-light times, as it powers the satellite systems and charges the battery bank as well. In dark the solar system cannot work and the battery bank starts to provide the generation. A dark situation occurs when the Earth comes in-between the satellite and the Sun, when the battery bank switches on to supply the power required.

In order to know more about antenna, let us now look at some of the terms used in defining an antenna characteristic. First, the radio signals received or transmitted by an antenna is related as frequencies and expressed in Hertz (Hz). Frequency has been names as Hertz (Hz), after Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1847-1894), who was first to transmit and receive radio waves. Hertz is a measure of the frequency and denotes the number of cycles that a signal undergoes in a second. For example, if a signal makes a complete cycle in one second, that is measured as 1Hz. As for the term Bandwidth in the concept of radio communication, the difference between the highest frequency signal component and its lowest one, in terms of Hz, is the spectrum which is called the bandwidth of the signal. A typical voice signal has a bandwidth of 3 kHz, that is to say that the frequency of a voice lies within 3 kilo hertz bandwidth, where-as the TV signal has a bandwidth of 6MHz, some 2,000 times as wide as the voice. In here, k and M denote kilo and Mega respectively. For understanding, the table below provides the conversions:

Staying in the subject of bandwidth, generally three types of bandwidths are utilised in satellite communication and these are, Ku-band, L-band and C-band. The Ku-band uses frequencies from 14 Giga Hertz to 14.5 Giga Hertz (see Table 1), for up-linking signals from the Earth stations to the satellite and 11.7GHz and 12.7GHz and for down-linking from the satellite to the Earth stations.

It has been mentioned above, that receiving and transmitting frequencies, to and from the satellite are kept wide apart, to avoid any interference between the two. The higher frequencies, Ku-band frequencies are significantly more susceptible to signal quality problems caused by rainfalls. This is known as ain-fading.

L-band frequencies range from 390MHz to 1,55GHz. Satellite communication and terrestrial communications between satellite equipment uses this band of frequencies. L-band higher frequencies are less susceptible to rain-fading compared to Ku-band signals.

The original frequency band allocated for satellite communication is the C-band frequency, which uses 3.7GHz to 4.2Ghz for down-linking signals to the Earth stations and 5.925GHz to 6.425Ghz for up-linking from the Earth stations. The lower frequency ranges in this band have a better performance under bad weather conditions than the Ku-band frequencies. Variations of C-band frequencies are being used in different parts of the world and these are classified as, Extended C-band, Super Extended C-Band, INSAT C-Band, etc. C-band requires a larger Earth station dish antenna, varying between 3 inches to 9 inches, depending on the design parameters. Reflector antennas are mostly used in traditional geostationary satellite, having applications in fixed satellite services (FSS) and maritime mobile satellite service (MMSS). These are used to link L-band, C-band and Ku-band, which require high gain antennas with parabolic dish structure. A reflector antenna is the one which has a spherical wave-front, which means that the radiations of the signals from the antenna are spherical in nature, one in which the energy spreads out in all directions away from the antenna and produces a pattern that is not very directional. A parabolic antenna is specifically used for high directivity. These antennas are illuminated by a set of feed antennas or indirectly through a system of sub-reflectors. A feed antenna will generally consist of a horn type structure, having electronics components for signal amplifications and signal conditioning circuitry. This feed antenna is mounted at the absolute center of the dish reflector antenna, with the horn facing the center of the dish. There could be multiple horns in such feed antenna.

Most of the Low Earth Orbit satellites have space constraint to have any of the type of parabolic antennas. Instead they have antennas which are known as Whip Antenna. There is ofcourse a shrink in the gain of the antenna in comparison to the reflector antenna as used with the geosynchronous satellites. This loss of gain is compensated by the reduction in the distance that such satellites orbit the Earth, being just 2,000 kilo meters as compared to 40,000 kilo meters for the geosynchronous satellites.

The ground antennas for the low Earth orbiting satellites are of generally Yagi or Helix design. Low Earth orbiting satellites use very low frequencies in receiving and transmitting signals and the dish antennas would be impractically large. There is not much of a difference between the requirement of a low Earth orbiting satellite and a geosynchronous one and with the advent of modern systems, like Motorola's IRIDIUM, that require sophisticated beaming of signals, low Earth orbiting satellites may soon have phased arrays and reflector antennas.

The Yagi antenna derives its name from two Japanese inventors, Yagi and Uda. This is the reason why the antenna is also referred to as Yagi-Uda antenna. The invention was first published in 1928, which was presented by Yagi himself. This type of antenna consists of an array of a dipole and additional parasitic elements. There is another element, a reflector, slightly larger in length than that of a dipole. This arrangement gives antenna better directional characteristic than a single dipole antenna. Yagi antennas are directional, along the axis perpendicular to its plane of elements, from the reflector to the driven parasitic elements. It is interesting to note that additional directors in these type of antennas increase directivity of the signals, where-as, addition of further reflectors makes no significant difference.

The gain of a Yagi antenna is controlled by the number of elements that it has. However, spacing the elements is also a design factor in terms of gain of such antenna. The design of the Yagi antenna has many inter-related variables, and earlier designs were not being able to achieve the full potential or performance of these antennas. And just why would you want to go back to the old days and connect to an outdoor antenna? It just may give you better picture quality on your high-definition (HD) television. More and more local television channels are broadcasting in HD. But you say you already have cable or satellite. Great! The problem might be that the satellite provider or the cable TV company may compress the signal before sending it to you, giving you a poorer picture. And they may charge an additional fee for local channels. An outside antenna with the right technology will give you local HD broadcasts that are not compressed and it is free.

You may not really care about HD television. You may be perfectly happy with analog (old fashion) broadcasts on your current TV. It wont be long and you wont have a choice. The United States government is requiring all broadcasters to switch to digital by February 2009. That isnt all that many page turns on the calendar.

The pictures you get, or will get on an HD television with an antenna will be great. If you arent aware of digital technology, you dont get a weak, fuzzy or snowy signal. You either get a flawless signal or none at all, just a black screen. There would be no snow like you sometimes got years ago from your old antenna and analog signals.

So if you get either a perfect picture or no picture, why not just use rabbit ears? Good question. You can. Your local HD broadcaster doesnt care about providing space for other broadcasters. In fact, they would be perfectly happy if you simply watched their station only. There is no data removed, no signal compression.

If you are an ESPN, CNN, History Channel, Disney Channel, or Weather Channel junkie, you wont be capturing them with just an antenna, inside or out. You can add an antenna as a signal source to your cable or satellite system and, for a small price, enjoy the ultimate your local broadcasters have to offer, along with the other channels you are addicted to.

If you decide you want to try either an indoor or outdoor antenna for HDTV, they range in price from about $20 to $170. You can also try making your own. It isnt that difficult and would save you even more money.

No matter if you are interested in HDTV or not, the time is coming when you wont have a choice. An antenna may be your answer. Even if it isnt, they are cheap enough or easy enough to make yourself that you can test the performance out before you make a final decision.

It's probably not something many people are interested in unless they're some kind of an electrical engineer or just bored, but understanding how an antenna works can be useful when the one on your TV or radio goes south on you and the reason is beyond your comprehension.

Trying to explain how an antenna works in simple English is not an easy task as there are a lot of technical specifications that need to be explained. But a general understanding is possible without getting into tech speak that would make Einstein cringe.

In order for an antenna to work it has to radiate. Your antenna, whether TV or radio has what is called free electrons running through it. It is these free electrons that vibrate. The question becomes, how do these free electrons vibrate and what causes them to vibrate?

Well, in real life it takes an electric field to move an electron. If you take an isolated straight dipole, the power comes from the combined fields of all the charged particles, both positive and negative, in the antenna. We'll call this field the antenna's coulomb field.

In addition to this field, the antenna exhibits a magnetic field that is the sum of the magnetic fields of all the free moving electrons. The antenna also has a dynamic electric field that is the vector sum of the dynamic electric fields of all the free electrons. What we can do is separate the electric field of the antenna at any point in space into two components. One of the components will be in phase with the total magnetic field and the other will be 90 degrees out of phase. The in-phase component is the radiation field of the antenna and the out of phase component is the induction field. At the antenna, both fields are parallel to the metal surface.

What happens is that the coulomb field and the induction field fall off much more quickly than the radiation field as the distance increases from the antenna. When you reach distances greater than a few wavelengths from the antenna, you have what is called the antenna's far field. This field is pure radiation. As you get closer to the antenna you have what is called the antenna's near field. This field is a mixture of radiation, coulomb, and induction fields. Still with us? Great, we're getting to the good part.

What ultimately happens with all these fields that makes it so that your TV or radio picks up signals through your antenna is this. The free electrons moving through your antenna are moving at their maximum speed. The right hand half of your antenna accumulates electrons. The left hand half of your antenna is where the electrons depart and leave an excess of charged ions. The coulomb field produces an imbalance and opposes the electrons' rightward motion. The electrons then stop, coast for a bit and then head back towards the left. After they reach maximum speed they then stop and process is repeated, now heading back to the right. The result is a vibration of free electrons that heats the metal and in turn generates electromagnetic waves.

And that, in as simple English as possible, is how your antenna works.

Continuing with our research into the CB craze of the mid 70s we'll take a look at what were considered the elite antennas when it came to having a CB setup. While the truckers may have ruled the roads and channel 19, it was the everyday hobbyist who ruled the airwaves from his home, and rule they did.

If you were on CB and really wanted to impress people with your booming voice over the airwaves you had no choice but to set up a base unit. Not only were the units themselves powerful but the antennas that people put up on their roof tops could have given some rival TV stations a run for their money.

Choosing a CB antenna for your base station was not easy. There were plenty to choose from and they all had their pluses and minuses.

One of the most powerful, yet most frustrating was the ever popular Moon Raker. This was a beam antenna that looked very similar to TV antennas, most having 3 elements mounted on an 11 meter base. These were called regular Moon Rakers. However, there were beam antennas that had up to six elements on them. They were referred to as a Moon Raker 6. These things were huge. The problem with them was that they were directional antennas. What this means is that depending on what direction your antenna was pointing that was where you got your best reception and transmission. So if you were speaking to somebody who was south of you and your antenna was pointing north you had to turn the antenna 180 degrees in order to get a decent reception. This got to be a pain after a while. The plus side was that these antennas were so powerful they could cut through anything once you had your target zeroed in.

Another popular base antenna was what was called the "Big Stick". This was really just a very long fiberglass antenna. They were usually about 10 to 15 feet long. They weren't as powerful as the Moon Raker but they transmitted and received equally well in all directions and therefore were great all purpose base antennas especially if you were in a centrally located area where you had a number of people you could speak to in all directions. Also, Big Sticks were relatively cheap next to a Moon Raker that sold for a couple of hundred dollars. A Big Stick was about $70.

For people who didn't have a very large budget, there were base station antennas made that quite honestly were not much more powerful than their mobile counterparts. When you take the lack of power of these antennas into account against their price tag of about $50, it made much more sense to go with a Big Stick.

The biggest problem with all of these antennas, especially in the old days, was that they were constantly interfering with TV receptions. Today with cable, things are not quite as bad.

Even though CB isn't as popular with homeowners as it was 30 years ago, you can still see these bad boys on roof tops if you look close enough. Just make sure you stop the car first before taking a look.

The word antenna became popular because of Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian scientist. Marconi was testing experimental wireless equipment in the Alps of Salvan, Switzerland way back in 1895. A tent pole in Italian is called l'antenna centrale and Marconi was using the term antenna to describe the pole that serves as the transmitting and receiving elements of his wireless equipment. Today, the term used by Marconi is now being used uniformly to refer to this type of equipment. Antennas are usually intended for communication applications involving radio waves. Although other communicating systems that utilize electromagnetic waves other than radio waves still use antenna to refer for their transmitting and receiving elements.

There are two basic types of antennas. The omni-directional antenna radiates electromagnetic signal equally in the three dimensional plane while the directional antenna radiates the signal more in one direction. Adding conducting elements such as a rod or a coil and varying their spacing, direction and length can create a specific antenna with specific properties. By connecting several antennas to a common source, it becomes an antenna array that has a directive radiation pattern. The conductive means for conveying signal energy between the active antenna and the source is called antenna lead-in while the components between an amplifier and the active antenna is called antenna feed.

There are certain parts of an antenna that perform a distinct function. A few of these parts are the reflector and director. The reflector is usually a metallic plate or screen that reradiates the electromagnetic radiation coming from or going to the active antenna and adding a component in an opposite direction to the velocity of the interrupting electromagnetic wave. The director on the other hand, works in a similar manner but adds a component on the same direction to the velocity of the interrupting electromagnetic wave. Most antennas are made up of simple vertical rods. These simple antennas are inexpensive and are omni-directional with respect to the horizontal plane. However, the direction that the rod is pointing at is a null area where the antenna can't receive or transmit. Theoretically, signals transmitted by an antenna can travel at great distances and at the speed of light. In reality, the speed of the signal is affected by the medium it is passing thru. Radio waves can even penetrate solid materials such as a non-conducting wall. Some solid materials however, may totally reflect the signal and in essence, not allowing it to pass through.

As such the viewing area for say a 26" wide screen HDTV is much smaller then a 26" regular TV set, so if you want the equivilent viewing area, you should buy something like a 32" Wide screen HDTV. The bottom line is, if you are buying a wide screen hdtv, remember that to get the equivalent viewing area of your regular tv, your hdtv should be of a bigger size.

2. Do Not Purchase an HDTV that is not Wide screen. All HDTV broadcasts are in Widescreen which means a 16:9 aspect and will not be correctly viewed on a non-wide screen HDTV.

3. Try to buy an HDTV with 1080 Resolution instead of 720. 1080 Gives you a Better Picture.

4. Anyone using or planning to use Cable or Satellite TV, can save money buying an HD Ready set instead of an HD set with a built in HD Tuner. This simply means, that with your HD ready TV, you will receive your HDTV broadcasts direct from the receiving equipment of your Cable and Satellite Service.

5. You Need actual HD service from your Cable or Satellite Company in order to actually watch HDTV. The price is relatively low. If you do not pay for this service, then your picture is not HDTV.

6. If you get a DVR or TIVO make sure it is an HD DVR or HD TIVO or you will not see what you recorded in HD. You need an HDTV to watch HD playback from an HD DVR or HD Tivo.

7. I would buy an extended warranty just for the security of knowing that if anything went wrong with your HDTV set, you at least have the security of knowing that you'll be able to fix it or repair it right away. For me, the cost of what I paid, was worth the security of knowing I'd have my HDTV for the years to come.

8. If you go to a chain store or department store, many of the pictures you may be seeing on the TV sets on display, may not be actual HDTV broadcasts. I would call the store in advance or go to a store that specializes in HDTV where you know you will be seeing HDTV broadcasts.

9. On the whole, you will be getting better expertise from a salesperson from a store specializing in HDTV then a chain store. This is not to say, that there aren't knowledgeable salespeople at chain stores but the chances are you will find more knowledgeable ones who do this for a career. I would always ask for a salesperson who had been with the store the longest.

10. If you have a Home Theater System, the sound of an HDTV set from its built in speakers is not important. You will actually be receiving your sound through your Home Theater System from your Cable or Satellite TV provider.

11. If you have the money, I personally would recommend you spending the $50 or more dollars to buy quality component cables rather then use the free component cables supplied by your cable or satellite company to connect your HDTV as you'll probably get a better picture.
